Saudagar 1991 - film Trivia

After. about 30 years of Paigham, Dilip Kumar, and Raaj Kumar came together in Saudagar, nobody thought about bringing them together only Subhash Ghai thought, and he said and challenged that no one can bring them together only he could. This is the 3rd and last Subhash Ghai film with Dilip Kumar together. The mastery of Subhash was how handled these two great actors. It’s not easy to have such big people in a single project. You have to treat them with a lot of care, and yet manage to get great performances out of everyone. Every filmmaker cannot do that. Saudagar is The debut film of Vivek Mushran. Manisha Koirala was to debut in Anokha Andaz 1989 which got delayed for years and she made her debut in this film. Vivek Mushran and Manisha Koirala went on to act in four films.Saudagar 1991,First Love Letter 1991,Insaniyat Ke Devta 1993 and Sanam 1997 , In between Insayniyat Ke Devta and Sanam Manisha Koirala had better films than Vivek , Saudagar was a successful film because of Dilip Kumar & Raaj Kumar no doubt about that, Vivek Mushran & Manisha Koirala got a big push in films coming in a film with a big star cast especially with acting with these two big actors. Subash Ghai won the award for best director at Filmfare 1992 awards. Amitabh Bachchan was approached for Jackie Shroff's role in the film. Amitabh refused it as he did not want to do a special appearance in a Subhash Ghai film. Aamir Khan was originally offered for the role of Vasu but felt the role was too small, Both legends Dilip Kumar and Raj Kumar were very much impressed with the music. Salman Khan was offered the film, but it did not work out, Divya Bharti was screen-tested for Manisha Koirala's role, however, Subhash Ghai felt she was too young for the role. Subhash Ghai said in an interview that Raaj Kumar was worried that Subhash would give Dilip Kumar more screen space because Subhash Ghai feels that Dilip Kumar is the hero of all his films and he assured Raaj Kumar that he gets equal screen space and also Raaj Kumar said that to give him the same type of acting as Dilip. There are other reports that Upon arriving on the sets of the film, Raaj Kumar realized that Dilip Kumar's character spoke Hindi with a U.P. BIhari dialect. This angered him as he was to speak regular Hindi in the film and he was not told about Dilip's character.  He told Subash Ghai he was quitting the film right there and then and returning back to Bombay. Subhash Ghai had to go and convince Raaj Kumar for two hours to remain in the film. Ghai reasoned that Raaj Kumar's character was rich and royal where as Dilip's was a poor lower cast character. Hearing this Raaj Kumar finally relented and stayed in the film. Both Dilip Kumar & Raaj Kumar were nominated for best actor in the 1992 Filmfare awards.
