1996: Blood and bore

THE FILM OF THE YEAR: Raja Hindustani was a refreshing break from the routine stuff.

IMPRESSIVE SHOW: Manisha Koirala.

FLOP SHOW: Sonali Bendre and Ajay Devgan.

Violence in films has become a virtual no-no for the masses. This became quite evident in 1996 because the mindless violence in the action-packed films like Beqabu, Bandish, Dastak, Rakshak, Mafia and Shastra were outrightly rejected by the audience.

The five films which can be classified as super-hit this year - Agnisakshi, Saajan Chale Sasural, Hindustani (dubbed), Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi and Raja Hindustani- have amply proved that the masses would like soft family entertainers and detest mindless and gory violence which at times tends to exceed sadistic levels.

hit film, Sajan Chale Sasural.

Apart from the box office tsunami Hum Aapke Hain Koun, The other major Superhits of the year were Mohra, Dilwale, Jurassic Park (Dubbed). and the other Hits were Raja Babu, Laadla, Suhag, Gopi Kishen, Yeh Dillagi,Anth, Elaan.

Major moderate success were Vijaypath, Andaz Apna Apna Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na, Zaalim, Saajan Ka Ghar, Cheetah, Khuddar, Salaami, Cheetah.

Major duds of the box office were Chaand Ka Tukda, Mr. Azaad, 1942 A Love Story, Amanat, Anjaam, Hum Hain Bemisaal, Aatish, Sangdil Sanam, Betaaj Baadshah, The Gentlemen, Eena Meena Deeka.

Sunil Shetty, an out and out action hero, who declared that he would quit films early this year, has bounced back with more films to his credit. Yet in 1996 none of his films like Ek Tha Raja, Vishwasghat, Shastra and Rakshak6/ were utter flops. Sapoot which remained an average film saved his skin.

But for the success of Agnisakshi, Jackie Shroff would have been in his career's worst phase as three of his starrers, Dushmani, Bandish and Return of Jewel Thief were miserable flops.

Ajay Devgan, yet another action hero, managed to sustain his image with Jaan becoming a hit and Diljale doing average business. His other film, Jung was a big flop.

Though Sunny Deol's two films, Himmat and Dushmani, flopped at the box-office, he saved his skin with hits like Jeet and Ghatak.

Salman Khan had only one hit, Jeet, as against two flops, Khamoshiand Yeh Majhdaar. Nana Patekar who became hot property with Agnisakshi had a blemish with Khamoshi. Aamir Khan maintained his position with only one release, Raja Hindustani, which turned out to be a super hit.

With three hits to her credit -Jeet, Sajan Chale Sasural and Raja Hindustani - Karisma Kapoor's career graph went high but unfortunately the law of averages caught up with her as she had equal number of flops to her credit like Megha, Papi Gudia, Bal Brahmchari, Rakshak and Sapoot doing average business.

Urmila Matondkar who shot to fame with Rangeela last year had also a hit film Hindustani (dub) to her credit. This was her only release.

The Nepali nymphet, Manisha Koirala too had two big hits, Agnisakshi and Hindustani (dub) while her other three films, Dushmani, Yeh Majhdaar and Khamoshi were flops.

Juhi Chawla could not establish her credentials this year too with her starrers, Daraar and Bandish flopping at the box-office, though Loafer saved her. Madhuri Dixit seems to be losing her No.1 position as two of her releases- Prem Granth and Rajkumar - were miserable flops. Sridevi had only flops to her credit in 1996 including Mr. Bechara, Army and The Great Train Robbery (dub).

Tabu emerged as the top heroine this year with more hits like Sajan Chale Sasural, Tu Chor Main Sipahi and Sazaa-E-Kaala Paani and Maachis doing average business. Shilpa Shetty could not make the grade this year as two of her releases, Himmat and Chote Sarkar turned out to be damp squibs.

Raveena Tandon improved her position with hit like Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi but her other starrers like Vijeta and Rakshak wiped out her success.

Top directors of the year were Dharmesh Darshan (Raja Hindustani), Rajkumar Santoshi (Ghatak), Partho Ghosh (Agnisakshi), David Dhawan (Sajan Chale Sasural), Raj Kanwar (Jaan) and Umesh Mehra (Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi). Shankar too made it big with Hindustani.

With two hit numbers - Pardesi Pardesi (Raja Hindustani) and Ekrar Karna Mushkil Hai Inkar Karna Mushkil Hai (Agnisakshi) - Nadeem-Shravan scored over other top music directors in 1996. Jeet and Sajan Chale Sasural also got them a few accolades.

However, Anu Malik who had maximum number of films to his credit released in 1996 could not make his presence felt as only two of his films, Diljale (Ho Nahin Sakta) and Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, had catchy tunes.

Rajesh Roshan could provide only one good tune Ghar Se Nikalte Hi (Papa Kahte Hain) while in Dastak, he did not come up to expectations. Adesh Srivastava gave only one hit number - Kya Ada Kya Jalwe Teri Paro in Shastra but the film flopped. Two music directors- Anand Raj Anand (Masoom) and Vishal Bharadwaj (Maachis) made impressive debuts. Anand Milind with multiple releases did not make any impact at all.

During the year nearly 25 films were dubbed from various languages. Of them only Hindustani, a patriotic film starring Kamal Hasan, directed by Shankar, became a super hit. Other films like Antim Yudha, Bandit Queen, Divine Lovers, Great Train Robbery could not muster their strength at the box-office.
